History of Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand state of India.

Rishikesh is situated at an altitude of 409 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalaya Mountains and is surrounded by Shivalik Range. The river Ganges flowing through this religious place due to the Himalayan hills and natural beauty makes Rishikesh incomparable. The serene environment of Rishikesh is home to many famous ashrams. Rishikesh is made up of a combination of two words, “Rishik” and “Ash”. “Rishik” means “Indriya” and “Esha” means “Lord or Guru”.

After independence, Rishikesh was declared a holy Hindu city.

In the 1960s, the “Beatles” came to Rishikesh to study yoga. Since then the city has called itself the “Yoga Capital of the World”. Rishikesh is considered to be the gateway to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

Mythology Rishikesh:-

Rishikesh was the residence of a famous “Saint Rihanna Rishi”. He did penance on the banks of the river Ganges. Due to this Lord Vishnu appeared before the saint Rihanna Rishi in the form of “Rishikesh” as a reward.

For this reason, this place was named Rishikesh.

It is also believed that Rishikesh is part of the mythological “Kedarkhand”.


History of Haridwar

In this place, Lord Rama did severe penance to kill Ravana. Sri Rama’s brother Lakshman had crossed the Ganges at a particular point. Which is known as “Lakshman Jhula”.

The second story says that “Bharat”, the brother of Lord Rama, did penance at this place, after which a “Bharat Mandir” was built in Rishikesh.

And it is also said that “Lord Shiva” drank the poison that came out during the churning of the ocean at this place. After drinking the poison, his throat turned blue and he came to be known as “Neelkanth”. And for this reason “Neelkanth Temple” was established in Rishikesh because of the glory of Lord Shiva.

However, after Adi Shankaracharya, a famous religious guru visited this place in the 9th century, Rishikesh gained prominence as a religious place.

Swarg Ashram
